God is sovereign. It is a glorious and profound reality in the Bible. That aspect of his divine character which states that all belongs under his rule; all existing as his dominion. All matters of time and space controlled; decreed by him and foreordained by the counsel of his will. It is glorious in the strength of it, for truly there is none like the Lord. For who "can stay his hand or say to him, 'What have you done?'" (Dan 4:35). It is profound because it is a mystery to us. His divine direction of all matters and men, confounds the mind and displays our finitude.
Listen, as we explore such an example in the 7th chapter of Ezra. The working of generosity from a Persian king, credited as the kindness of God. Here we see not only the sovereign decree of the Almighty in shifting a rulers heart, but the wonderous purposes intended in doing so.
