Jesus says that he sends his disciples out as "sheep in the midst of wolves" (Matt 10:16). A people, in other words, who can expect to encounter the attack of the enemy on their home turf. An enemy that looks the part and says the right words, but is ravenous to destroy.
The church must be prepared. And this is exactly what Jesus does in the final portion of his temple discourse, railing against the religious leaders, but warning his people about what to watch out for in the future.
